Trucker Saves Family, House from Flames
10/18/2006
Sioux City, IA - The Truckload Carriers Association has recognized Cloverleaf Transport driver Gena Seibel of Sioux City, IA as a Highway Angel for saving a family and their house from a fire.
Seibel was on her way to pick up a trailer when she passed a house that had an unusual bright light emanating from its front porch. She quickly turned around, saw the light had doubled in size, and realized the house was on fire.
Parking her truck at a nearby gas station, Seibel dialed 911 and ran to the front door of the burning house, where she knocked loudly to wake up any occupants.
"I kept knocking on the door and saw a teenage girl run through the smoke to a side exit to see what was going on," Seibel said.
After a hurried conversation with Seibel, the girl ran to wake up the rest of her family, as Seibel kept her eye on the fire. A police car quickly appeared, but the officers did not have a fire extinguisher. Seibel ran back to her truck for her fire extinguisher and used it to put out the flames on the porch. In the meantime, the family had fled through the back door.
The family later thanked Seibel for saving them and their house, which they had just bought.
"I wanted to help, because I would want help if I was in trouble," Seibel said. "I felt it was the right thing to do."
